The visual arts are at the core of my practice. I work on my own and also with other people to make illustrated narratives about local knowledge. Trained as an anthropologist, my approach is from the stand point of a participant observer.

I learn from folk about what they know by joining in. I frequently use drawing as a basis for interacting with people. Drawing is such an open-ended type of creative activity. The process of drawing, and what results from it, can be as fluid as body painting, and as fixed a silverpoint on velum.

My drawings aim to become artefacts of a process which records the cultural significance of the ordinary. Land of Straw, 2022, my most recent exhibition at the Shetland Museum and Archives, focussed on the social effect of growing Shetland Aets.
